Scientists from Finland have recently been able to use topographic methods to see what the effects different emotions have on body temperature and other sensations in the body.  What’s interesting is that after five experiments and over 700 participants, there was an outstanding degree of accuracy between where people said they felt a certain emotion on their body and where that emotion showed up on their body using topography.  According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences:

Most basic emotions were associated with sensations of elevated activity in
the upper chest area, likely corresponding to changes in breathing and heart rate (1). Similarly, sensations in the head area were shared across all emotions, reflecting probably both physiological changes in the facial area (i.e., facial musculature activation, skin temperature, lacrimation) as well as the felt changes in the contents of mind triggered by the emotional events. Sensations in the upper limbs were most prominent in approach-oriented emotions, anger and happiness, w
hereas sensations of decreased limb activity were a defining feature of sadness. Sensations in the digestive system and around the throat region were mainly found in disgust. In contrast with all of the other emotions, happiness was associated with enhanced sensations all over the body.


So when you experience love or pain in your heart, you are literally feeling it over the heart area of your body, and we would be able to prove that scientifically.  Could this give us new insights into treat things like anxiety, anger, and depression?

Emotions coordinate our behavior and physiological states during survival-salient events and pleasurable interactions. Even though we are often consciously aware of our current emotional state, such as anger or happiness, the mechanisms giving rise to these subjective sensations have remained unresolved. Here we used a topographical self-report tool to reveal that different emotional states are associated with topographically distinct and culturally universal bodily sensations; these sensations could underlie our conscious emotional experiences. Monitoring the topography of emotion-triggered bodily sensations brings forth a unique tool for emotion research and could even provide a biomarker for emotional disorders.

This strong correlation between emotions being harbored in the brain and the sensations we feel in our body demonstrates how important having peace of mind is for physical health.  Maybe we can start looking at emotions in terms how how our minds and bodies interact with the environment, instead of them being things just created by our brains.

“People look at emotions as something in relation to other people,” Antonio Damasio, who is a professor at the University of Southern California, says. “But emotions also have to do with how we deal with the environment — threats and opportunities.” For those, Damasio says, you need your body as well as your mind.

According to the ancient Indian traditions, emotions are generated and stored in different energy systems in the body known as chakras.  With some solid scientific evidence in place that the body AND the mind play a role in the experience of emotion, we can now take the next step of exploring just why it is that some emotions are universally experienced in the same places in the body for everyone

I’ve earnt the reputation of being able to provide an atmosphere of safety, respect and optimism for the capacity to overcome difficulties. In the process, my clients have developed an increased sense of satisfaction and effective control over their lives.

Using acquired Personal Development Life Coaching and Counselling skills, I have supported and encouraged people to fulfill their potential and make the most out of their lives. It has been of paramount importance to encourage clients to stay motivated and committed to exploring ways of overcoming barriers and setbacks. Planning, goal setting and goal evaluation have been a useful tool in my therapeutic approach.

As a Counsellor and Life Coach it is my role to encourage individuals to get to know themselves better and identify the causes which are holding them back. I strongly believe in developing routes towards moving forward and making change happen, resulting in success. I have spent the last few years searching for the answers to life’s balance. I have had my share of life experiences both business and personal problems, having succeeded and failed in both.
